However, many vulnerable communities in Bangladesh continue to face challenges related to sanitation, water pollution and environmental degradation.
Recognizing these challenges, Integrated Development Organization (IDO) has been working to promote safe water, sanitation and improved living conditions among poor and vulnerable communities since 1993.
What is an Eco Toilet?
An Eco Toilet, or ecological sanitation system, is designed to provide a sanitary and environmentally responsible approach to managing human waste. The system helps prevent waste from mixing with soil and water while allowing valuable nutrients to be reused in agriculture.
Unlike conventional sanitation systems, the Eco Toilet described in the IDO publication separates urine and other waste and facilitates their appropriate management. The collected urine can be diluted with water and used as an agricultural fertilizer.
Bringing Safe Sanitation to Vulnerable Communities
The villages of Raghurampur and Bashbaria in Keshabpur, Jashore, have historically faced serious challenges related to water and sanitation. According to the IDO publication, these villages experienced prolonged waterlogging and difficulties in accessing safe water and sanitary latrines.
To address these challenges, IDO established 42 Eco-san toilets in the two villages under its Eco-san project.
The initiative was designed not only to improve sanitation facilities but also to promote greater awareness among community members about hygienic toilet use, environmental protection and responsible waste management.
Turning Waste into a Resource
One of the important features highlighted in the IDO publication is the potential to transform human waste into a useful agricultural resource.
The Eco-san system prevents urine and stool from mixing with water and allows the nutrients to be managed separately. Diluted urine can be applied to agricultural land as fertilizer, reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers and supporting agricultural production.
The publication also documents the experience of Abdul Mannan, who learned about Eco-sanitation through an IDO awareness meeting. After installing and regularly using an Eco-san toilet, he began using diluted urine as fertilizer in his agricultural fields. The case study describes improved crop production and economic benefits from this practice.
Protecting Women, Families and the Environment
The Eco-san approach can also contribute to household safety and dignity. The IDO publication notes that conventional toilets located far from homes can create safety concerns, particularly for women at night. Eco toilets located closer to the household can help reduce these concerns.
The system also aims to reduce environmental pollution by preventing human waste from entering surrounding soil and water sources.

IDO’s Eco-sanitation initiative demonstrates that sanitation can go beyond simply providing a toilet. With appropriate technology and community awareness, sanitation can contribute to:
